An
Orange Mind
by Sue Maddox Toth
The dog days of summer, so
much to bare.
The smell of diesel permeates
the air.
Backed up traffic, another
breakdown!
Welcome ya’ll to our tourist
town.
A vital link in the mid-Atlantic
region,
and almost everyone hates
tourist season!
They don’t pay attention
or read the signs,
one might think that they
were blind!
Overheights, wide loads
and accidents galore,
yet every year we are visited
by more!
The Bay is lovely with it’s
ships to be seen,
but it only takes one, you
know what I mean.
There we stand, in our orange
suits,
a perfect target for your
verbal abuse!
I wish I could fix it, God
knows I try!
Don’t throw things at me
as you creep by!
When whistles are blown,
and you are waved to move on,
Nine times out of ten we
see break lights come on!
We serve no purpose that
you can see,
just a pain in a place we
don’t want to be!
But when you need help it’s
us that you see.
We give you directions,
call you a tow,
protect you from things
you’d rather not know!
We help change a tire, give
a gallon of gas.
Then we can clear the tunnel
really fast.
No matter what happens we
are on the scene,
next thing you know the
light turns green!
We may not mean much to
you anyway,
but you see this is how
we earn our pay.
More happens here than you
will ever know,
as safe in your own worlds
you continue to go.
And the pulse of Virginia
continues to flow.

3 to 11 shift in the south west end of the west bound Hampton Roads
Bridge Tunnel. It was mid August and right at 100 degrees.
Traffic was backed up past Granby Street and creeping at about 5 mph.
We had break downs everywhere! I was still new and determined to
move the world. It was hostile in those green poly uniforms and safety
gear. These are the thoughts in response to the days events so far.
Hot, sweating and tired, I had 3 more hours to endure".~Sue Maddox-Toth
