A. SAILOR
by
A.Sailor
Who is "A. Sailor" you naively
ask?
I'll try to explain, but it's no easy task.
He's smart, yet he's dumb; he's shy yet conceited.
He's easily beaten, but never defeated.
He lives on the land, yet he
longs for the sea,
Knows not who he is, or
who he should be.
Though he learns from the
future, he's taught by the past.
He'll be searching and learning
'til he breathes his last.
He is nearly sixteen and
a little past fifty,
Though he wastes all his
money, he's really quite thrifty.
He hates getting started
but he loves to begin.
He's in love with most women
and dislikes most men.
He's strong as an ox and
exceedingly weak.
Rude and obnoxious, he's
incredibly meek.
He loves you or hates you,
sometimes he can't tell.
He believes in a heaven
but not in a hell.
He can be your best foe,
or the worst kind of friend.
Stops at the beginning and
begins at the end.
He's lived his life backward;
he's growing young fast.
He's departing the future
on his way to the past.
He can be an angel but sometimes
wears horns,
He bypasses sidewalks to
walk in the thorns.
He's not really a poet,
he can't even spel.
He dips words from his mind
like a drink from a well.
He colors way outside the
lines when he can.
He follows the leader but
he's his own man.
He thinks he is smart but
in truth he's a fool.
He always was brilliant
and stupid in school.
He wants to live longer but
not to get old.
He's warm and he's loving,
unfriendly and cold.
He likes who he is but wants
so much to change,
Loves life in the city;
is at home on the range.
When you think that you know
him he'll change just for spite.
He lives for the darkness
but he loves the light.
He is constantly changing
but always the same.
And as for "A. Sailor" well,
that's just a name.
Or here is another last verse
I might use,
You decide for me will you?
'Cause I just can't choose.
I'm sorry I fooled you.
I'm shy. Can't you see?
There is no "A. Sailor"
my friend, there's just me.

Note: About A. SAILOR: ~A. Sailor...Started out as an attempt to explain
the name I use when I write this stuff. It quickly changed into an exercise
in writing contradictions into each line. It still is kind of about me,
but mostly not. I love writing "between the lines". There is a line from
an old Karen Carpenter song that I love. "Listen to the melody, cause my
love is in there hiding". That doesn't have anything to do with this poem.
I just like the song.
